My lost instruments
When I listen to my old music, I inevitably hear myself playing the instruments I used to own. I gathered a lot of equipment over the years - most of which I didn't really know how to use very well, but adamant their additions would compliment whatever project I had at that moment. I played a lot of moodier music, so hearing it back really feels like a nostalgic dirge for the things soon lost.
I do feel very grateful about having used them at the time I did. They served a purpose and I can still revisit those songs and hear them used in the ways they needed to be at the time. I still remember specifically many of the electronics and organs I would buy for very cheap and make work for dark ambient tracks. I loved to experiment with them.
Over time I fell out of using them so much. I gravitate towards nylon string guitar and drums now. Both of which I have much more depth with and am not seeking much layered recording like I used to. I never trash things, much less instruments. All these instruments I used gradually found different homes with friends who had the same "a-ha!" moment, identifying a use for something I no longer had. Of course I would pass it along to them. This is the course of life for all second-hand things.
